WGW: January 22nd, 2020

Every week I send out an update to the medical school, which gets send out as part of WGW (What's Good Wednesday), an email where the associate deans of students compiles the professional and academic accomplishments and life events of the student body in an effort to help keep us connected even though we are spread out across lecture halls, campuses, and hospitals across the state. Usually populated by sporadic submissions of significance, after talking with friends before I left, I decided to twist the format to suit my needs to stay connected to my class. After the fifth week of consistent submission, my update was given it's own special place and title: Kassel's Corner.

Hello from the UK! Kassel Galaty (Med21?) is still living that sweet, sweet sabbatical life, and, now that Med20 is transitioning to residency, she is starting to accept that she may in fact be a Med21. The term has really, truly started and with it lectures! This week has been filled with topics like the "Pathologizing of Sexual Deviance: A History," "Decolonization of Science," and "The History of Science and Modernity." Once again she has an essay due Monday so send good philosophical  vibes and karma her way. During her studies she came across one a rather compelling essay on bioethics:

Between the lectures and the writing she hasn't done much in the way of fun, but she is still rowing, which means she's up by the time the sun rises. Enjoy these pictures of the sunrise. They may not be a view from the aerial tram, but they're not bad.

Cheers!

The Concept of Time, the Festival of Ideas, "When Was Reproduction Invented," and Wandering around St. Johns

About two weeks ago, I was running late for everything. Still working out the distance to things, not to mention where things were in the first place. As 5 pm rolled around, my phone calendar informed me that I was, unsurprisingly, late for one of the Cambridge Festival of Ideas* panel discussion/debate called “When Was Reproduction Invented?” Undeterred, I decided to brave whatever public shame walking in late would bring. I biked over to St. John’s College, and power walked to the building, marveling as I did at the beautiful red ivy covering the walls around me and wishing I had the time to photograph and admire the general splendor. *Cambridge Festival of Ideas is two weeks of intellectual FOMO. For two weeks, absurdly smart and qualified people discuss and debate their research and passion projects, usually with five different panels happening all at the same time in five different locations, at exactly the time you have something else planned. Turns out I did! I had put the...

After the fifth week of consistent submission, my update was given it's own special place and title: Kassel's Corner.  Kassel Galaty (formerly of Med20, now of Med21) continues to be in the UK. She went to several FASCINATING lectures this week, highlights include: "Smell in the 18th century," The Lungs of a Ship," "Philosophy of Psychiatry," and "How Should We Deliver Babies." She...

Kassel Galaty (#themedicalstudentformelyknownasMed20) forgot to send in her update last week because the term had officially ended and there was no longer any external indications of what day of the week it was. Weekdays blurred into weekends blurred into missed WGW dead...
